14th September 2007Baby Tiger Hiatus
Hi; We're going to take a few months off, with just the odd gig here and there to keep you all occupied. Never fear, we should be back in 2008. Raar.
17th April 2007The Loft
The baby tiger has moved to The Loft, upstairs from the Taylor's Hall Hotel (in the same courtyard as the 3 Sisters Pub), Cowgate, Edinburgh. Come see a gig!
29th January 2007Very much alive
We're not going to let a small matter of another venue closure get us down. Oh no siree! We still have some fantastic shows for you lined up in February including The Loves, My Radio, Five Day Hemingway, The Southern Tenant Folk Union , Blue Flint and The Stantons. And then from the start of March we are taking up a short residency at the Tron on Hunter Square to bring more of the fantastic music that you all love. Check this space for the listings in the next week or so. Pip Pip...
12th January 2007Cafe Royal Closure
The baby tiger regrets to inform you that as the Cafe Royal has closed, so too has our new-ish venue, the Den. Please check back over the next few weeks, and we should have an alternative venue sorted....

17th October 2006New Venue!

Yay! As of now, The Tiger has a new Den. Or maybe it's called something else. We haven't decided yet. Anyhow, it's in the Cafe Royal, West Register Street, Edinburgh, and the first gig is on Friday 6th October. We'll see you there! More details soon. Raar.

17th October 2006Press Release

Edinburgh music promoter Baby Tiger may have moved out of their premises of 4 years - a west-end backpackers' hostel - but any tears shed will be ones of joy as the half-dozen strong collective of music lovers unveil a great new venue.

Based on West Register Street - conveniently situated for Waverley Station - the custom-built music room named The Den (located within the Cafe Royal) is set to provide a much-needed addition to the capital's haphazard set of gig venues, and put back on track an unbroken tradition of weekend shows, which has seen live music in the Liquid Room, Cabaret Voltaire, The Bongo Club, Henry's Cellar, & the late lamented Edinburgh Venue, as well as their regular home in The Swamp Bar.

The new room opens for business on Friday 6th October with Porch Song Anthology - the band formed by former members of Scottish legends Telstar Ponies - while the following night sees theatrical popsters Scunner take to the stage of The Den. This gig is one of the monthly gigs co-promoted with Scottish magazine is this music? Other regular events include monthly indie night Pop Theory (which kicks off its residency on Saturday 14th).

From their new home, the Baby Tiger team will continue to showcase both the best in local and international talent

Background:

In its 4 years existence Baby Tiger has brought to the capital such names as King Creosote, The Broken Family Band, Monica Queen, and Half Man Half Biscuit, and promoted shows by upcoming Scottish acts such as De Rosa, Popup, FO Machete, The Hazey Janes, Motormark... and, notably, an early performance by one KT Tunstall.

They are also responsible for an annual festival - Tigerfest - which provides a month-long musical extravaganza - previously set in Edinburgh in August, the festival has expanded to incorporate Dunfermline, and has showcased James Yorkston, My Latest Novel, Aberfeldy, Malcolm Middleton and many others.

26th July 2006No More Hostel Anymore
Yes, a sad day - as of Saturday 29th July, we won't be putting on any more shows at The Swamp Bar. It's been a fun four years... A new venue should be up and running for September - more info when we get it.
6th July 20068th July Cancelled
Unfortunately we've had to cancel the show on 8th July with Private Jackson. Don't worry though, we'll get 'em back soon...

21st March 2006Tigerfest 2006
Zounds! Egad! Baby Tiger once again risks bankruptcy and public flogging to bring you the eagerly awaited Tigerfest 2006. It's happening in May, you know. Have a look at the website: http://tigerfest.baby-tiger.net

Attention you PA spods! The baby tiger has got a new shiny mixing desk. You can put 16 things into it, and get 8 things out of it. How reassuring.
10th January 2006Forest Gig Cancelled
Alas! The Donna-from- Amplifico gig at the Forest cafe has had to be cancelled due to last minute recording commitments (which is in itself pretty rock and roll!).
Miles.
15th December 2005More Xmas Party!
The Silhouettes have been forced to pull out of Saturday's gig, so the eternally lovely Damon Thompson has kindly agreed to plug the gap. Thanks Damon!
11th December 2005Xmas Party
A couple of changes to the Xmas Party lineup - due to illness and unavailability Miss Black America and A Very Secret History won't be there, but Korova and The Silhouettes have been joined by ace Fife partykids 96 Tears, so we recommend you come and bring a friend to dance inappropriately with.
18th November 2005December!
Well, it's nearly the end of a very hectic 2006, and we can proudly reveal that we've organised 100 gigs this year (or we will have, by 17th December). Did I say proudly? That's phenomenally silly. But it's been fun, there have been some great nights along the way, and hopefully 2006 will be even more ridiculous.

Anyway, December sees the return of Miss Black America and The Silhouettes at the Christmas Party (17th Dec) as well as the fantastic Tramp Attack, Red Bee Society, the first Very Acoustic night at the Holyrood Tavern and much more. Enjoy!

7th November 2005Stinky!
The Stinky Munchkins are now playing on Thursday 10th November in place of Demeter.
2nd November 2005November
Some excellent gigs on the way in November, including Ill Ease from Brooklyn on the 4th, The Ralfe Band on the 5th, Fuck-Off Machete on the 25th (all at the Swamp Bar) and Motormark/Demeter/Acrnym at Cabaret Voltaire on the 10th. Plus lots and lots of other excellent acts, obviously.
5th October 2005The Tremula get deported
Due to work permit issues, The Tremula will no longer be playing this Saturday. Alan Davison of Underbelly will instead delight us with some acoustic strummery.
22nd September 2005No Spin
The Spins are no longer playing at this Saturday's Baby Tiger show.
20th September 2005October gigs!
October gigs now up, including a fab Ballboy show, a Love Music Hate Racism extravaganza, a John Peel night plus sets by the fantastic Babygod, Thomas Truax and Moses. Far too much loveliness for just one month, but we're good to you.
19th July 2005Hobotalk!
Please note that Hobotalk have joined the Ballboy bill on 25th August in place of Multiplies.
7th July 2005The Remnant Kings replace John Scott

Zounds! John Scott is stranded in a flourescent lit limbo somewhere between JFK and Magnitogorsk. Pesky flight cancellations!

Fear not though, for the Tiger has procured the deep shag pile services of The Remnant Kings. So come anyway. Rawr.

B. Tiger

8th June 2005The Golden Hedges
The Golden Hedges have been added to this Saturday's Backpackers bill. Scuzzalicious.
31st May 2005new gigs!
June gigs now updated. Web monkeys have spread a scurrilous rumour that Yo La Tengo are playing on 10th June at Caledonian Backpackers. However, that's just wishful thinking on our part, sorry!
13th May 2005Mercedes off the road
Mercedes have been forced to pull out of their gig on 28th May as their singer's heavily pregnant. Hope it all goes well...they've been replaced by Edinburgh acoustic strummers Little Pebble.
21st April 2005May gigs
May gigs are up now, with highlights including a great Sluts of Trust show, Chris T-T, Josephine, Mercedes, Viva Stereo and Mercury Tilt Switch. Actually, they're all highlights.

Please note that although the Chris Brokaw gig on April 24th will be going ahead, it is no longer a Baby Tiger-affiliated event.
4th April 2005Ch-ch-changes
There's been a few amendments to April - Monica Queen will now play in May, and some Liverpool country types are coming to town.
29th March 2005DJ Quechua
A new DJ joins us for the 2nd April gig. He's DJ Quechua, champion of the indigenous South American tribesman, sure to play the best in Latino beats.
20th March 2005The Beasts of Queensferry St
torqamada Torqamada playing to a packed (ish) house at the aptly named Swamp Bar in the Caledonian Backpackers Hostel. The mighty 'amada score highly in categories such as rock attire, makeup and communing with beelzebub.
10th March 2005Replica replace The Kays Lavelle
The Kays Lavelle had to cancel their gig due to illness, but fear not!

The tiger has secured an alternative as alluring as a whole roast goat, in the form of Replica:

"The exceptional vocal interplay of Greg Jones & Andrea Harkin, reminiscent of early Everything But The Girl" (Daily Record).

8th March 2005Kays Lavelle Illness
The Kays Lavelle have had to pull out of Saturday's gig as their singer has a chest infection. Get well soon, David! Replacement to be announced shortly.
23rd February 2005March gigs
A distinctly Scouse feel to this month's listings, but we've also got contributions from noted alt-countryists, New Jersey rock and more local acts of much incredibleness.

Please note that De Rosa will not be playing on Feb 12th.
8th February 2005Luxury Car pull out

February gigs are now up on the site. Please note that Julia 13 are no longer playing on Feb 26th, due to illness.
31st January 2005The Disasters Emergency Committee (has a long name)

By an amazing stroke of luck (I mean dedicated hard work and split second timing), a whole bunch of people came to the Tsunami fund raising gig on the 13 January, featuring Bozilla, Piney Gir, Motormark and My Tiny Robots. The total amount raised was ?521.

Thanks to the artists for waiving their fee for the night, to Simon for auctioning some of his cartoons, and everybody who supported the event by showing up!

19th January 2005Kokolo
Kokolo have joined the bill on 29th January at the Backpackers. They're an ace octet from New York - come check 'em out!
13th January 2005Charity Gig

Just realised I hadn't mentioned this here - the Baby Tiger night on 22nd Jan, featuring Piney Gir, Motormark, Bozilla and My Tiny Robots, is now a charity gig, with all money raised going to the Tsunami appeal.

We'll also be running the charity auction we've been promising, with the sketches from Tigerfest up for grabs. It'll be a blind auction, with the highest bid winning each time, so you can bid via email between now and the 22nd - just drop us a line with your bid and the sketch it's intended for at shop@baby-tiger.net.

5th January 2005Open Mic
Just to let you know that the Open Mic was a roaring success (well, okay, a purring success) and as such will take place on the third Thursday of each month at the Northern Bar, Howard Place, Edinburgh at 9pm. Entry free.
14th December 2004January gigs!
Determined to get 2005 off to a good start, we've booked some of the UK's finest underground and coming acts for your delight, including the phenomenal Dead Fly Buchowski, the amazing Piney Gir and Motormark, the whimsically gorgeous Lucky Luke and the mysterious yet tremendous 3rd Dan. All with terrific local acts, too. Is that too much hyperbole for you? Yes? Well, it's all true. Trust me. I wouldn't lie to you, would I? Guv'nor?
9th December 200411th Dec off!
Unfortunately, 11th December's hostel gig has been cancelled, as two of the bands are ill. It's that time of year, folks...
8th December 2004No Hoboes

Please note that the Great Northwestern Hoboes are no longer playing on Saturday 11th December due to illness. A replacement will be announced shortly.

29th November 2004CD's needed for airplay
New Edinburgh local radio station Leith FM are looking for new acts to play on their shows. If you think your songs have what it takes, send them to: FAO Steve Sound Sauce Leith FM c/o Leith Dockers Club Edinburgh EH6 7EE and the best of Scottish to you.
29th November 2004New Open Mic Night

Thursday 9th December sees the start of a new open mic night at the Northern Bar, Howard Place, Edinburgh.

Hosted by Neil and Fraser from Edinburgh alt-pop band Calvin, this is a chance for Edinburgh's musicians to come down and try out their tunes in front of a (hopefully!) supportive audience.

As Neil is also part of Edinburgh gig promoters Baby Tiger, it's also a chance to show that you've got what it takes to play a gig at one of their events.

It's hoped that the focus will be on original material, though if you must play a cover, make it interesting!

We'll provide the PA, a guitar and a mic - you provide the tunes. Everything kicks off at 9pm and ends at 12.30pm. And with no cover charge for entry, what have you got to lose?

24th November 2004December changes
A couple of December changes - Fonda 500 have had to pull out, and Little Buddha have been replaced by Dropkick.
15th November 200427th Nov - amendment

13th November 2004December gigs
December gigs now up - highlights including Hull's answer to the Beach Boys, Billy Bragg's angrier son-in-law, found instruments and the band with the funniest website in Ireland. Neat-o.
26th October 2004John Peel
John Peel was the first national DJ to plug a Baby Tiger gig. In fact, he plugged lots of them, because he was a dude. We all owe him a debt of gratitude. Cheers, big man.
24th October 2004Sharon Kraus Gig Cancellation
Egad! Tuesday's Sharon Kraus gig at the Caledonian Backpackers has been cancelled due to illness. Sorry 'bout that.
18th October 2004November gigs
November gigs are up, highlights including Ballboy's homecoming, James Apollo's return and the Telstar Ponies' side projects. Something for everyone, then!
12th October 2004Bye Fraser!
Fraser Macdermid, co-founder of Baby Tiger, has parted company with us, in order to spend more time with his Championship Manager, and his slobbing pants. After two and a half years of being asked to drive stuff about at short notice, carry PA equipment and hassle bands to get in touch, we think he's earned his rest. A carriage clock and commemorative speech are in the post. Well done Fraser.
4th October 2004Sketches of Pop Stars!
Like, wow. We've got drawings of some of your favourite Baby Tiger bands now - just go to 'Sketches' and marvel at the wonder that is Simon 'Da Vinci' Madine...
1st October 2004Departure Lounge
The latest Departure Lounge is tonight, at the Caves on Niddry St in Edinburgh. Get down early for the amazing Russ Dewbury and live music from soul groovers the High Heel Sneakers, plus of course residents Astroboy and Mr Zimbabwe. It's seven quid, or a fiver if you're quick...all kicks off at about 10pm. http://www.departurelounge.me.uk
23rd September 2004October
We've now completed the October lineup, with several excellent gigs from Fence Collective members, Liverpudlian electronica-ists, Mancunian wall-of-sounders and a great Hallowe'en night special. Plus a collaboration with Edinburgh College of Art, to kick it all off.
16th September 2004Calvin plus fourteenhours
A slightly non-Baby Tiger post - Calvin, fourteenhours and DJ Postmaster Pete will be performing at Cabaret Voltaire on Blair Street tomorrow night (Friday 17th Sept) from 7pm onwards. Only 2 quid entry. Alt-pop tastic.
14th September 2004October
October gigs now on the site, with maybe a bit of tweaking still to do. Please note that there is no Baby Tiger night at Caledonian Backpackers on 2nd October. Well, we all need a day off sometime...
20th August 2004September at Baby Tiger
Ladies and Gentlespoons, we have September gigs. And they're very tasty. There is life after Tigerfest, after all. Phew.
15th August 2004We're Still Here, honest...
For those wonderfully cool people who read the Baby Tiger website (this one here) and the Baby Tiger Fanzine (that one) to get all your music info but who don't live close enough to get to any of our gigs, we'd just like to say thank you for being so patient with the lack of web site updates, we're a bit busy. The Baby Tiger will be back reviewing and the like after Tigerfest. Honest.
23rd July 2004Plan A gig
Degrassi and Bee Thousand have been added to the bill on the 24th of July.

29th June 2004Baby Tiger's Monkey Friends
Apologies to all who've registered so far but the resident Baby Tiger Web monkey has gone and messed it all up. Basically, the passwords all got set wrong. You should have already been e-mailed a new password but, if not and you're having trouble logging in, e-mail us and we'll give you a new temporary password.

Sorry again.
24th June 2004New Site

Well, it's all very exciting here at Tiger HQ right now. We're just days away from confirming the lineup for the inaugural Tigerfest - our August festival in conjunction with Fest newspaper, putting on all that is interesting, alternative, underground and just fine at the Festival this year. Never mind the Fringe, this is where the fun starts. Confirmed acts so far include Half Man Half Biscuit, The Fence Collective, Diwan, Thomas Truax, Monica Queen, Quinn, Bearsuit, Ballboy, as well as an SL Records night, a Wee Black Skelf night and more to come.

Not only that, but the new website is here! Featuring all the latest Baby T reviews, news, gigs, bands you should be listening to and comments on the music world around us, soon to be joined by a shop selling only the best CD's by our favourite acts, you'll never need to go to another website again. (that may be an exaggeration, but that's what advertising's all about, right?)

Last but not least, the July gigs are here, highlights including the excellent Goldrush, Amy Rigby with Astrid Williamson and Trademark, Caramel Jack, Plan A and a whole lot of other stuff too. Get stuck in.

11th June 2004June Gigs
Yes, the June gigs are here, featuring the very fine Roddy Hart, David Wrench, Pale Man Made, Mercury Tilt Switch, Denison Witmer and Salako, among others.
